How does the contemporary school library advance the mission and goals of their school in a rapidly changing, digitally intensive education environment? Drawing on research from around the world published between 2014 and 2023, this chapter presents extensive evidence that a well-resourced and professionally led school library contributes to student literacy, learning achievement, and well-being across different socioeconomic settings and school levels. Standardized test scores and qualitative evaluations of school leaders and teachers indicate these outcomes. Essential enablers of school library contributions include specialist teacher-librarians and support staff, consistent adequate funding for resources and services, and support of the school principal. The aim of this chapter is to support school principals in strategic decision-making about current and future school library provision among multiple competing budgetary priorities.
